Justin Smiths Eagle Scout Project

About the Project:

Justin researched, built, and installed bat boxes at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. Justin chose the Rocket Box style because each box can hold a large colony, they look professional, and they are aerodynamic so they won't fall over in due to winds coming from the bay. These four bat boxes will provide much needed habitat for native bat species, which are in decline due to habitat loss and white nose syndrome, and bats are an extremely important part of our country's ecosystems and economy because they eat insects and pollinate native plants. By installing the bat boxes in Fort McHenry, not only did Justin improve the ecosystem around the Baltimore Inner Harbor, but he also raise awareness for bats. Countless park visitors will be able to see his project at the park, providing an educational opportunity to improve the public opinion of bats and inspiring visitors to contribute to bat conservation efforts across the country.
